Previous Roundup Settlements and Verdicts
While there is no average Roundup settlement amount, plaintiffs have received settlements and awards. Some previous settlements and awards include:
- In January 2024, a Philadelphia jury ordered Bayer to pay $2.25 billion to a Pennsylvania man who claimed that using Roundup for 20 years caused his cancer, according to an AP News article. The award included $2 billion in punitive damages. Bayer appealed the decision and, in June, a Pennsylvania judge reduced the verdict to $400 million, according to Reuters. The award included $50 million in compensatory damages and $350 million in punitive damages.
- A Philadelphia jury ordered Bayer to pay $3.5 million to a woman who alleged that her Roundup exposure caused her cancer. The award included $462,500 in compensatory damages and $3 million in punitive damages, according to Reuters.
- A Missouri jury ordered Bayer to pay $1.56 billion to four Roundup plaintiffs in November 2023, according to Reuters. A Missouri judge reduced that verdict to $611 million in April 2024. The reduced award included $61.1 million in compensatory damages and $549.9 million in punitive damages, according to Reuters.
- A California jury ordered Monsanto to pay $332 million to a Carlsbad man who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. This settlement included $7 million in compensatory damages and $325 million in punitive damages, according to AP News.
- Bayer offered a $10.9 billion settlement to settle thousands of Roundup cases in 2020. The settlement included $8.8 billion to $9.6 billion for current litigation and $1.25 billion for future litigation.
- In October 2023, a Philadelphia jury ordered Bayer to pay $175 million to a retired restaurant owner who alleged that Roundup caused his cancer. The award included $25 million in compensatory damages and $150 million in punitive damages, according to CNBC. This amount was actually increased after being awarded. According to the Pennsylvania Record, the judge awarded an additional $2.3 million in “delay” damages, calling Bayer’s challenge to the original award “unfathomable,” “stubborn,” and “indignant.”
- In October 2023, a St. Louis, Missouri jury ordered Bayer to pay $1.25 to a man who claimed that his exposure to Roundup caused his cancer, according to a Reuters article. The jury did not award punitive damages.
- In May 2019, a California jury ordered Bayer to pay $2 billion to a couple who alleged that Roundup caused their cancer. The verdict included $55 million in compensatory damages and approximately $2 billion in punitive damages. In July 2019, a California judge reduced that award to $86.7 million, with $17 million in compensatory damages and $69 million in punitive damages.
- In March 2019, a California jury awarded a man $80 million, approximately $5.2 million in compensatory damages and $75 in punitive damages. This was the first Roundup lawsuit taken to federal court. In July 2019, a federal judge cut the punitive damages by $50 million, reducing the award to $25.2 million, according to CNN.
- In August 2018, California jurors awarded DeWayne Johnson $289 million in damages in the first-ever Roundup lawsuit award. The award included $39.25 in compensatory damages and $250 million in punitive damages. In October 2018, a San Francisco Superior Court judge reduced the award to $78 million. This reduced award included $39.25 million in compensatory damages and $39.25 million in punitive damages, according to NPR.
Bayer has been ordered to pay billions of dollars in Roundup lawsuits, although it has appealed most of these verdicts with mixed success.
These settlements and verdicts do not guarantee a potential award; however, they show what previous juries have awarded.
Factors That Could Affect Your Roundup Settlement Amount
While we can’t tell you exactly what you might recover in a Roundup settlement or award, we can explain what factors could affect your amount.
The Severity of Your Diagnosis
A more severe diagnosis will likely cause more pain and suffering and may also require more treatment in certain cases, which could lead to higher settlement amounts.
The Treatment You Need
If your doctor caught your cancer early, it may be easier to treat. You may only need to undergo a round or two of chemotherapy or radiation. However, you may need other treatments, such as a bone marrow transplant.
Depending on the treatment you need, you may have tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills.
Whether You’re Able to Work Again
Some people with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, B- or T-cell lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, hairy cell lymphoma, or mantle cell lymphoma are able to work during treatment and after. Others are not. If you are unable to go back to work, those losses are compensable.
Your Age and Profession
Your age and profession can also affect a settlement amount. For example, if you are unable to return to work but are nearing retirement age, your settlement amount may be lower than that of a 40-year-old who cannot return to their job. If you have a high-paying job, your settlement amount may be higher than that of someone with a lower-paying job.
Many of the Above Factors Are Used in a Points System to Determine What You Can Recover
Roundup cases have a “points system” for determining your “settlement tier.” You receive a certain number of points based on certain factors, including:
- The type of cancer: Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, has been linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other cancers.
- The severity of your cancer: The stage and degree of your cancer will affect your point value.
- Your age: Your age at the time of your diagnosis will factor into your points total.
- How long you were exposed to Roundup: People who have been exposed to Roundup for decades will typically have a higher point total than those who have been exposed for a few years.
- How you were exposed to Roundup: People who use Roundup regularly at work typically have a higher point total than someone who uses it in their yard a few times a year.
The points system is used so that claimants receive an award that better reflects their specific losses, rather than everyone receiving the same amount, regardless of their situation. The higher your point total, the higher your settlement will likely be. A Roundup lawyer can help you determine how these points can affect your potential settlement.
Damages You Can Recover in a Roundup Settlement
What you can recover in a Roundup lawsuit settlement or verdict depends on the specifics of your case. However, you may be entitled to:
Economic Damages
Economic damages are those with specific values. Roundup lawsuit economic damages could include:

- Lost wages
- Lost earning capacity
- Miscellaneous expenses related to your diagnosis (e.g., installing a stair lift in your home)
Non-Economic Damages
Non-economic damages are those without standard values. In a Roundup lawsuit award, they could include:
- Pain and suffering
- Mental anguish
- Emotional trauma
- Loss of consortium
- Loss of enjoyment of life
