Exposure to Glyphosate, a Toxic Chemical

Glyphosate is an active ingredient present in a wide variety of commercial herbicides. Making up 41% of Roundup Original, glyphosate is a key ingredient in many products within the Roundup family. The chemical works by inhibiting an enzyme that is essential to plant growth. Monsanto persists that the plant-killing chemical is harmless to humans, however, several studies have shown higher rates of cancer in mice that were regularly exposed to glyphosate.

While there is limited substantial evidence linking glyphosate and cancer in humans, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans” in 2015. This announcement was based on convincing evidence offered by the studies conducted with lab rats. Additionally, the IARC cited evidence from studies conducted by the USA, Canada, and Sweden that all show farmers and other agricultural workers exposed to large amounts of Roundup developed cancer at higher rates.

Glyphosate is used in homes and farms around the world. Humans can easily be exposed to the potent chemical by:

  • Drinking contaminated water
  • Eating food grown in soil that has been treated with the chemical
  • Regularly breathing air near sprayed areas
  • Touching plants that have been sprayed

If you have developed cancer and believe it was a direct result of regular exposure to glyphosate present in Roundup products, you could be entitled to receive compensation to cover your pain and suffering, medical bills, or any lost wages. A Roundup attorney can help determine if you have a case and how you should proceed.

Roundup Lawsuits in State and Federal Courts

Monsanto is facing a surge of cancer lawsuits in state and federal courts. Thousands of victims have filed lawsuits claiming that the company falsely advertised the safety of their Roundup products and covered up the apparent risks of cancer.

Approximately 560 lawsuits against Monsanto have been combined in San Francisco and will be handled as Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) in federal court. In other words, the lawsuits will be tried together in order to better manage the large number of cases all surrounding the same issue.

In August 2018, the first Roundup cancer lawsuit was tried in front of a San Francisco jury who ordered Monsanto to pay $289 million in damages. The plaintiff, a former school groundskeeper, was diagnosed with terminal cancer after routinely using Roundup. The damages, $39 million in compensatory damages and another $250 million in punitive damages, were intended to help him live his remaining days more comfortably and punish Monsanto for its harmful, negligent actions.

Poor Research Practices Hide Potential Cancer Risk

Documents containing Monsanto’s internal emails and communication between the company and federal regulators raised further concern over the safety of Roundup and the research methods of its manufacturer, Monsanto.

The court records revealed that Monsanto had ghostwritten research studies and published them under the name of credible academics. Furthermore, the documents indicated that an official at the Environmental Protection Agency had worked to the company’s advantage to stop further research on the effects of glyphosate that would have been conducted by the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

While there are limited scientific findings on the dangers of glyphosate in humans, Monsanto’s poor research practices and attempt to manipulate further review from taking place cast doubt on Roundup’s safety.

If you have been affected by a Monsanto product containing glyphosate, it’s imperative to consult a legal professional who can help you understand any legal options you may have.

International Concerns Over Monsanto’s Weed Killer

The U.S. isn’t the only country with concerns about Monsanto’s weed killer. Numerous countries have placed partial or full bans on the use of glyphosate. Government officials in France are following suit and hope to phase out herbicides that contain glyphosate over a three-year period.

Safety is Essential for Widely Used Products Like Roundup

The New York Times stated in an article about Monsanto that, “Over the last two decades, Monsanto has genetically re-engineered corn, soybeans and cotton so it is much easier to spray them with the weed killer, and some 220 million pounds of glyphosate was used in 2015 in the United States.”

The safety of Roundup is imperative to Americans because it is such a widely used product across the United States. It can affect the food we eat, the water we drink, and the health of our bodies.

Monsanto should be held accountable for their irresponsible practices and failure to warn the public of the potential risks involved with using their product.
